AND THE OSCAR 'LET'S GO'ES TO...

jeff redoes the 2019 oscars

the oscars are quite significant for the film industry but they kinda suck every time

the academy consists of a lot old farts who neglect good movies and fail to understand the industry that they are representing. i might go in depth on this on another page, but for now, let's see what my nominees and winners for the 2019 oscars would have looked like

and i am definitely more qualified to judge the oscars because i, unlike the academy, have seen more than 10 films from the 2018 year.

BEST PICTURE

Blindspotting Burning Hereditary Isle of Dogs Suspiria The Sisters
Brothers
Sorry To
Bother You
Under The
Silver Lake

best picture is a very subjective category, as everyone has different opinions and looks for different elements to determine what makes a movie "the best". i don't share a single nomination with the academy for this reason. The Favourite and Roma were the only nominees that i felt were worthy of being nominated. the other nominees were underwhelming or bad

BEST LEAD ACTOR

Daveed Diggs
in
'Blindspotting'
Rami Malek
in
'Bohemian Rhapsody'
Ethan Hawke
in
'First Reformed'
Charlie Plummer
in
'Lean On Pete'
Jim Cummings
in
'Thunder Road'

the academy nominated lead actors were actually all quite good this year. however, i like to look a very transformative performances, enforced by subtleties and nuanced mannerisms, and strong line delivery that can turn bad writing into convincing dialogue. honourable mentions to john c reilley in the sisters brothers, andrew garfield in under the silver lake, gael garcia bernal in museo and all the academy nominated actors, who were actually all quite great

BEST LEAD ACTRESS

Elsie Fisher
in
'Eighth Grade'
Olivia Colman
in
'The Favourite'
Toni Colette
in
'Hereditary'
Maggie Gyllenhaal
in
'The Kindergarten
Teacher'
Dakota Johnson
in
'Suspiria'

wow wow wow there were so many great female performances this year. this was a hard choice, so let's give out some honourable mentions to viola davis in widows, yalitza aparicio in roma and cynthia erivo in bad times at el royale

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Lewis Pullman
in
'Bad Times at
El Royale'
Rafael Casal
in
'Blindspotting'
Steven Yeun
in
'Burning'
Steve Buscemi
in
'Lean On Pete'
Anton Yelchin
in
'Thoroughbreds'

my nominees are once again completely different from the academy's but this time i feel like the academy was just too lazy to actually consider looking at films they haven't already nominated. some performances they picked for this were completely unremarkable in any way. honourable mention to daniel kaluuya in widows for playing one of the most menacing characters in any movie this year

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Emma Stone
in
'The Favourite'
Rachel Weisz
in
'The Favourite'
Regina King
in
'If Beale Street
Could Talk'
Tilda Swinton
in
'Suspiria'
Elizabeth Debicki
in
'Widows'

this time im pretty similar to the academy, and their picks were generally great. however, as seen with 2 of my differing nominees, i do have a few small differences in who i thought was the best supporting actresses

BEST DIRECTOR

Yorgos Lanthimos
for
'The Favourite'
Alfonso Cuaron
for
'Roma'
Luca Guadagnino
for
'Suspiria'
David Robert Mitchell
for
'Under The
Silver Lake'
Steve McQueen
for
'Widows'

the director is the person behind the movie, and for my nominees, i looked for directors who were not just able to create a fantastic movie, but their unique craftsmanship shines through in the final product of the movie. there are a lot of great directors who made great movies this year, but for me it ultimately came down to 3: lanthimos, cuaron, and guadagnino.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE

Isle of Dogs Spiderman: Into
the Spiderverse

i watched all the nominations that the academy listed but i only think 2 of them are worthy of being nominated, and both of these movies are fantastic, many leagues above the other academy nominees, to the point that i don't even think it's necessary to nominate the others. shoutouts to shrek retold, which was partially animated, but i don't think it qualifies as elligible for nomination here... and same thing can be said for tenacious d: post-apocalypto...

BEST ANIMATED SHORT

ok i only watched 3 animated shorts, none of them were amazing but bao was the best of the 3, the other 2 were kinda bad, let's just go with bao.

conglaturation bao, hell ya to asian film makers, let's take over hollywood

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

American Animals The Ballad of
Buster Scruggs
The Death
of Stalin
A Prayer
Before Dawn
Suspiria

what i look for in adapted screenplay is how they translated the source material into a cinematic experience. there are films that i found "objectively better" than some of the nominees here, such as the sisters brothers, lean on pete, spiderverse, and if beale street could talk, but i picked these films for their clever and unique approach towards the adaptation, which resulted in something very fresh and entertaining to watch. im looking for movies that take the original work that the film is adapted from, and makes it something so much more

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

Bad Times At
El Royale
Blindspotting Searching Sorry To
Bother You
The Favourite

my nominees for best screenplay are the movies that i found with the best script, the best dialogue, storytelling, and how effective movie blended a visual element to compliment the writing. honourable mentions to eighth grade, burning, and tully

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY

The Ballad of
Buster Scruggs
First Reformed Hereditary Roma Suspiria

cinematography is what you say when you want to sound educated about movies. also it's how the movie is presented visually, it's the framing, the camerawork, the shot composition, etc. good movies are made better with their amazing cinematography, and i've nominated what i found to be the best ones from this year. i want to also give a shout out to bad/adequate movies with suprisingly GREAT cinematography: aquaman, game night, mandy, and a star is born

BEST DOCUMENTARY

Free Solo Minding the Gap Science Fair Three Identical
Strangers
Won't You Be
My Neighbour

it's been a pretty great year for documentaries, however i did not get to watch of fathers and sons, or birds of passage, and based on activity from critics and friends that i follow, i could see either making a nominee over one that i have here... regardless, the documentaries i nominated are all worth watching for sure

BEST DOCUMETARY SHORT SUBJECT

literally didn't watch any of these, so i'll have to skip this one, oops! maybe i'll have an input once video essays from youtube become elligible

BEST LIVE ACTION SHORT FILM

i only watched skin after i saw that it won best live action short and i can say that it was... kinda disappointing. the acting was very hard to take seriously and the ending was comical... definitely let out an audible laugh when the director clearly intended the scene to be shocking and horrifying. i am embarrassed for the academy and guy natiev, as this film was fundamentally broken and very poorly executed. and speaking of oscars messing up, let's move onto film editting.

BEST FILM EDITTING

BlackkKlansman Museo Roma Suspiria Widows

film editting is hard to judge. when a movie has good film editting, the audience should not even notice it. scenes should transition seemlessly, and the movie should never feel artificial (unless that is intended). this is why bohemian rhapsody winning this year was extremely shocking to me, as that film's editting was so bad it was nauseating and i had to take breaks to rest my eyes from all the camera cuts. if not for the good acting and queen's amazing music, i would not have been able to finish it. for my nominations a thing that was hard for me to consider was animated movies or films with a unique presentation such as 'searching'. if you include these types of films as elligible candidates, these nominees would be completely different once again. anyways, i just went with movies that i remember having something notable with their editting, as well as movies that i remember were generally pleasing to watch, not solely for the cinematography. honourable mentions to first man, the favourite, the sisters brothers, ballad of buster scruggs, american animals, and mission impossible: fallout

BEST SOUND EDITTING

sound editting is a category that is hard to judge, as i think research should be done to see how the sound editting was done, what kind of foley was done, what kind of effort was put into the sound design, and so on. it's not right to say that sound mixing and sound editting are the same thing, but i do think that movies that generally have good sound mixing are movies with good sound editting. i'll just point out that movies i remember with good sensory detail are suspiria and first man, though those movies may not necessarily be the best in sound editting. i'd have to do more research.

now let's move on to sound mixing

BEST SOUND MIXING

First Man Mission Impossible:
Fallout
Roma Suspiria Widows

sound mixing can really separate a good movie from a great one. theres something special about a movie that can play perfectly to your senses. sound is also something that is vey fun in action movies. i would like to give an honourable mention to under the silver lake, a quiet place, the night comes for us, and avengers infinity war

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN

Bad Times At
El Royale
The Favourite The Sisters Brothers Sorry To
Bother You
Suspiria

production design is pretty cool too, a lot of movies have very good production design nowadays. i picked my nominees based on how memorable the visuals and the sets are to me

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE

If Beale Street
Could Talk
Isle of Dogs Mute The Sisters Brothers Suspiria

a good score is a score that not only sounds great but compliments the film, and reinforces the tone. honourable mentions to first man, mandy, and blackkklansman

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM

Burning Happy As Lazzaro Museo The Night
Comes For Us
Roma

foreign cinema is great, i highly doubt that the academy watched any

BEST ORIGINAL SONG

Shallow
from
A Star
Is Born
When a Cowboy Trades
His Spurs For Wings
from
The Ballad of
Buster Scruggs
Suspirium
from
Suspiria

music is very subjective as well, and there was only 3 movies with standout songs. i've decided to only nominate the best from each, and the academy actually nominated 2 of the same ones. all the music from a star is born is great, surly joe from buster scruggs is also great, and so is in memorium from suspiria. i'd actually be more than happy to listen to all of these songs on my own time.

BEST MAKEUP AND HAIR

The Favourite Suspiria Vice

2 obvious picks (tho the academy seemed to have missed one), and i also nominated the favourite because everyone just looked so beautiful in that movie. i have not seen border or mary queen of scots, so i cannot say if the academy is wrong or not, but based on pictures, the makeup and hair in those movies are not bad at all

BEST COSTUME DESIGN

Avengers: Infinity War The Ballad of
Buster Scruggs
The Favourite The Sisters Brothers Suspiria

costumes are pretty self explanatory, and look, suspiria is nominated yet again. it's kinda just great at everything. honourable mention to el royale, if beale street could talk, first man, sorry to bother you, and aquaman hahahaha

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS

Annihilation Avengers: Infinity War First Man Mission Impossible: Fallout Solo: A Star Wars Story

ahahahahaha i almost nominated aquaman for this. there is good visual effects in some parts of aquaman, but there's also a lot also playdoh looking people swimming in plastic armor so i nominated the star wars over it.

wow that took a long time, but there we have it, the oscars have been improved by me on my website. can't wait to do this again next year.
