Canoeing in Temagami 2004 (Looking
ahead..)
The
lush and rugged environment southwest of Temagami in northern Ontario is the
setting for this course. The region has breathtaking cliffs, clear blue
waters, and abundant wildlife. You’ll paddle this pristine wilderness where
receding glaciers left hundreds of lakes, streams, and marshes surrounded by
some of the last stands of towering white pine. One of our longer adult
courses, it’s a great opportunity to test yourself. Backcountry navigation,
water safety, paddling, portaging, and rock climbing are just some of the
activities you’ll be engaged in. The course starts in Burk’s Falls, 3 hours
north of Toronto.
The wilderness will be your classroom. The lakes,
rivers, forests, mountains, and ocean provide the challenges. Some of these
challenges will be physical, like launching a sea kayak into the rolling waves
of Georgian Bay, climbing a rugged peak, or portaging a canoe through the
boreal forest. Other challenges are more subtle, such as developing your
leadership skills or learning to work effectively as a member of a team.
The rewards come from meeting these
challenges and accomplishing what you thought was impossible. Students
not only learn the technical skills demanded by travel in the wilderness, but
they also develop long-lasting attributes that are the hallmark of Outward
Bound, such as adaptability, responsibility, confidence, integrity,
persistence, and the ability to work with others – qualities that will last a
lifetime.
You’ll gain confidence and a new level of
respect – for yourself, for others, and for the environment. It’s a
total workout for the body, mind, and spirit.
