1. Suggested Topics for the March 2007 Issue
2. Types of Section

Suggested Topics (Not inclusive)
General

  • Do empowerment strategies differ from North to South?
  • Are female empowerment and male empowerment two distinct entities? Must we target them separately?

Men’s Health

  • Why are men less likely to seek HIV testing than women?
  • If most condoms sold, donated, or distributed are intended for male use, why do health promotional messages primarily focus on women asking their partner to wear a condom?

Women’s Health

  • 100 Million Women Missing Worldwide – Does the advancements in technology and education stop the practice of female infanticide?
  • Has the development of female condoms and microbicides reduced the risk of HIV vulnerability in at-risk women?

Genetics and Technology

  • Is the term race-specific medications warranted with the recent findings that different ethnicities experience and react to hypertension medication differently?

Mental Health and Physical Disability

  • How do cultural barriers influence mental health-seeking behaviours?
  • How do health care professionals measure quality of life and personal autonomy of patient care for the severely depressed or physically disabled?

Conflict and War

  • Many analysts confirm the evidence of a real-time genocide occurring in Darfur, Sudan, and yet, the critical mix of political agenda and manpower has not stopped these untimely deaths. Is knowledge power, enough?
  • Rehabilitation of Child Soldiers? What does it take?
  • Well after the cessation of conflict, the impact of direct and indirect civilian deaths and injuries can continue to impede the regeneration of communities. Under these circumstances and with little access to mortality and morbidity reports, what is feasible to expect from humanitarian aid?
  • There are currently nearly 25 million Internally Displaced Peoples (IDPs) worldwide, roughly twice the total number of refugees. IDPs do not have a specific international legal instrument that applies to them as do refugees, because any attempt by an outside body to tell a nation how it should treat its own citizens has been seen as a violation of the principle of national sovereignty and self-determination. What role then, does the international community play in assisting IDPs still considered as citizens within the confines of there borders?  What are the rights of IDPs?

Economics

  • How does microfinance attempt to address the gender inequity and systemic poverty?
  • Does food aid foster food insecurity in the countries receiving donations?
  • Can one ensure purchased diamonds to be conflict-free (blood diamonds)? And has its awareness changed consumer choices?
