die young
(translation)

Translation: iro (2006.12.06)

my lonely soul has no heart to recognize her, it just wants to see her once more (in the world of men)
when the red willows were green, when the holiday fireworks went off in Jiangnan(1) (in that year)

half my white hope:
I wanted to stay by your side until our hair turned white         I'd have no regrets
but it can't be helped, heaven doesn't follow human wishes
days pass by, time unsuspended         don't wet your new clothes on my desolate mound (don't pine away for me)
young people become old people         before long, we'll grow wings into a pair of swallows (don't ache for me)

half my white hope:
even if I don't have the strength to enter heaven, I won't swallow Old Lady Meng's(2) broth
I must retain the memories I had in this life, so I can recognize your face

heaven, if you pity me         please let me become a butterfly
so in summer I may fly by her side; a fraudulent trade for just her smile
lightly spreading my wings, to make a wind to move corruption, sending my cool thoughts to dry her sweet sweat

heaven, if you pity me         please let me become a plum blossom(3) petal
so in winter I may adorn her hair, to multiply nine times one wisp of warmth
a drop of red on white snow to dazzle the eye in a bleak view, reflecting her delicate beauty

(1) Jiangnan is the region south of the Yangtze river in China.
(2) In Chinese folk legend, when you go to the Underworld in death, you drink this Old Lady Meng's broth to forget your past life.
It is comparable to the waters of the River Lethe in Greek mythology.
(3) Mei hua, or plum blossoms, are very prominent and well-loved in Chinese culture. They are notable for being one of the only
flowers that bloom in winter, while other flowers have died, and are quite beautiful. They are also known as ume in Japanese.
