The general objective of our
workshop was to outline the unique supportive community housing
model we have developed for the 21 residents at our Broadview houses
and to discuss the effectiveness of the model; and how it is different
from other alternatives being offered for individuals coming out
of addiction treatment programs and/or other supportive housing
arrangements. This housing model is unique in the way that it is
self-managed by the residents with some outside accountability support
and with weekly house meetings for internal communications and individual
accountability. Also, the houses are self-funding, except for the
coordination and administrative functions. The overall relapse rate
for people completing addiction treatment is estimated to be over
90%. The relapse rate for individuals living in our homes is under
25%.
Our conversation about this
housing model included:
• The entrepreneurial nature of the project
• a review of the project on Broadview Ave. since it began
in May 2006.
• a review of how many individuals have lived in these houses
and why they have left.
• an outline of the living & support arrangements at the
house
• an outline of the management structure of the of the houses
including the contributions by residents and other people from 6
St. Joseph – www.6stjoseph.ca and from the Alano Club –
www.alanobroadview.ca
• our outreach to the Riverdale community and to other organizations
serving people with addictions and mental health challenges. |
