Faculty and TAs in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) disciplines have long recognized that the students in their classrooms generally do not reflect the diversity of the broader general and student populations. A central question is "What can any one individual instructor do?". This essay proposes that STEM instructors use a model adapted from research on problem solving to explore the lack of diversity in the STEM student population. As expert problem solvers, STEM instructors are well-prepared to begin addressing this issue in their own courses and programs.

This article suggests tips for teaching in racially diverse classrooms, such as what a teacher can do in preparation for class, what a teacher can do to be sure the classroom itself is open to all students, what a teacher can do to intervene in racially charged situations and handle hot moments, and questions a teacher might ask to examine his or her own racial or cultural biases in preparation for teaching.
