II. Future Technology

1. Gesture-based Computer Interfaces

This technique has been realistically invented and is being used currently. Gesture-based computer interface refers to the technology of touch screen but a lot more advanced. Some examples of current day innovations that use this technology would be the Nintendo Wii and the iPod touch. These systems use the technology of tactile response. Apple’s iPod uses hand gesture technology, where the user touches the screen with their hands to play games, type font, scroll, zoom, flick, and so on.

2. Flexible Display

Flexible Display refers to digital print, using polymer and stainless-steel substrates and electrophoretic ink to display characters. In the movie Minority Report, flexible display is utilized to display automatic updates with the latest news articles. This technology had been introduced by Samsung a couple years back, but has not yet been released to the market.

3. Iris recognition

Iris recognition refers to the technology where a person’s eye goes under detection to identify them. “Iris recognition technology has been with us for a while. It is often referred to as biometrics, and has been tested in airports and at cash machines.” (Neil M 2002). In more practical terms, this technology is used on laptops, where the user’s iris is detected to unlock the computer for private use.

4. 3D Holograms

This technology has been present in many movies. Holograms are used to display non-realistic, but 3D, forms of humans or objects that are at a different place. During the American presidential election in 2009, the hologram technology was used on CNN to display people who were outside the studio to the studio setting (Brian 2008).

5. Robot Scouts

In the movie Minority Report, the robots shown are spider-like robots, which chase down Tom Cruise. A similar idea is used in the U.S military today, making use of them in unmanned aircraft, in spotter planes for scouting (Brian 2008).
