April 19. I was

April 2-5. I
will be presenting two papers at the 2013 ISA conference in San
Francisco, one on typologies of democratic diffusion, and another on
legacies of state birth.The first, presented on Thursday, April 4 at
10:30am is titled "From the Spring of Nations to the Arab Spring:
Building Better Typologies of Democratic Diffusion." The second,
presented on Saturday, April 6 at 10:30am, is titled "Legacies of Blood
and Legacies of Law: The Effects of State Emergence on Political

March 20. I have
an article in the last issue of International Theory,
titled "Complexity and Theories of Change in International Politics."
The article examines how complex systems can help elucidate patterns of
change in structural realism and democratic diffusion. An ungated PDF

On February
26, I will be giving a talk at the University of Toronto titled
"Competing Visions of Democracy in the Post-Soviet Space". (7-9pm, Room

30, I wll be presenting a paper at the annual APSA meeting, titled
"Legacies of Blood and Legacies of Law: The Effects of State Emergence
on Political Development." The paper is part of a new project that
examines the effects of birth legacies on the economic and political
