Domestic Regimes and Institutions

Democracy

Polity IV. 1800-2014. An "annual, cross-national, time-series and polity-case formats coding democratic and autocratic "patterns of authority" and regime changes in all independent countries with total population greater than 500,000 in 2014 (167 countries in 2014)."

BMR. 1800-2010. Boix, Miller and Rosato dichotomous coding of democracy.

Polyarchy Dataset. 1810-2000, 187 countries. The index "attempts to measure democracy with two variables: competition and participation (Vanhanen 2000: 253). Both variables are calculated using election data, and the democracy index is estimated by combining the two."

V-Dem: Varieties of Democracy Project. 1900-present. A multidimensional index of democracy.

Unified Democracy Score. 1946-2012, "virtually every country in the world." A measure of democracy that combines other indices to create a composite scale, along with estimates of measurement uncertainty. Associated article by Melton, Meserve, and Pemstein available here.

Freedom in the World (Freedom House). 1973-2015, most countries. Index of global political rights and civil liberties. Country-year dataset available here (Excel file).

Democracy Barometer. Measures "the quality of democracy in 30 established democracies. The data also aims to measure the fine differences among the featured states, allowing for benchmarking between established democracies."

Autocracy

Autocratic Regimes Data. 1946-2010. Geddes, Wright, Frantz 2014. "The data identify how regimes exit power, how much violence occurs during transitions, and whether the regimes that precede and succeed them are autocratic.

Freedom on the Net (Freedom House). 2010-2015, 199 countries. Measures degree of internet and digital media freedom around the world.

Freedom of the Press (Freedom House). 2002-2015, 199 countries. Measures freedom of print, broadcast, and internet freedom.

Nations in Transit (Freedom House). 2003-2015, 29 countries. A "comprehensive, comparative, and multidimensional study of reform in the former Communist states of Europe and Eurasia."

Countries at the Crossroads (Freedom House). 2004-2012, 70 countries. An "an annual analysis of government performance in 70 strategically important countries worldwide that are at a critical crossroads in determining their political future."

Elections

Project on International Election Monitoring (Judith Kelley). Includes the Quality of Elections Dataset (1978-2004; "codes the quality of national level legislative and presidential elections in 172 countries") and Data on International Election Monitoring (1980-2004; codes the assessment and activities of international election monitoring organizations to national level legislative and presidential elections in 108 countries).

National Election Across Democracy and Autocracy (NELDA).1960-2006. "Detailed information on all election events."

The Institutions and Elections Project. 1972-2005. "A collection of data on political institutions and practices, and political election freedom for all countries in the international system between 1972 and 2005."

Election Passport. A "rich dataset of constituency election results in over 100 countries and territories throughout the world."

 

War and Conflict

Correlates of War Datasets (including Militarized Interstate Disputes, Interstate/ Extrastate/Civil Wars.

Military Interventions by Powerful States (MIPS). 1945-2004. "Detailed data on American, British, Chinese, French, and Russian uses of military force against both state and non-state targets."

Major Episodes of Political Violence. 1946-2012. "Annual, cross-national, time-series data on interstate, societal, and communal warfare magnitude scores (independence, interstate, ethnic, and civil; violence and warfare) for all countries."

Coups d'Etat. 1946-2014. A list of "successful, attempted, plotted, and alleged coup events reported in Keesings Record of World Events (Keesings Online) and other sources." Codebook.

Forcibly Displaced Populations. 1964-2008. "World Refugee Survey series, annual, cross-national, time-series data: numbers of "source" and "host" refugees and internally displaced persons (time-series and country data formats."

High Casualty Terrorist Bombings. 1989-2014. A list of "bomb attacks on non-combatant (civilian and political) targets by non-state actors resulting in 15 or more deaths (1120 cases)."

Armed Conflict Location and Event Dataset (ACLED). 1997-2014, Africa and 30 high-risk states. "Near real-time conflict tracking, with georeferenced data disaggregated by type of violence - including battles between armed actors, violence against civilians, and rioting - and by a wide variety of actors - including government forces, rebel groups, militias, and civilians."

Social Conflict Analysis Database (SCAD). 1990-2013. "An events-based dataset on social conflicts from 1990-2013, covers all of Africa and now also Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean."

Formal Alliances. 1816-2012. "This data set records all formal alliances among states between 1816 and 2012, including mutual defense pacts, non-aggression treaties, and ententes."

Religion and State Project. 1990-2008, all countries with population over 250K. Measures official government policies dealing with religion (constitutional clauses, treatment of religious minorities, etc.)

Membership in Conventional Intergovernmental Organizations. 1952-1997. Failed States

State Failure Problem Set. 1955-2014. Crime in India. 1956-2006. "Country, state, and district (beginning in 1971) figures on annual numbers of riots, murders, and dacoity events (also, cases of arson beginning in 1996); includes annual state numbers of civil and armed police and area and population figures."

India Sub-National Problem Set. 1960-2004. "Compiles events data drawn from representative news accounts of violent conflicts in India."

Quality of Governance (QofG) Dataset. 1946-2011. A compilation of hundreds of county-year variables.

PRIO Replication Data. Replication data for JPR, as well as a number of datasets dealing with conflict, governance, conflict, and geography.

Harvard Dataverse. An open-access repository of replication data and datasets.

Environmental Performance Index. Indices "indices environmental sustainability (the Environmental Sustainability Index) and environmental performance (the EPI)." 

Pew Research. Survey data on a variety of topics, including opinion polls and surveys of global trends.

Legatum Prosperity Index. 2009-2014, 142 countries. Ranks countries based on several criteria that combine wealth and well-being.

UNDP Human Development Reports. 1980 or later, most countries. A variety of data dealing with social and economic development. Includes the Human Development Index, the Gender Inequality Index, the Multidimensional Porverty Index, and others.

Worldwide Governance Indicators (WGI). 1996-2013, 215 states. Measures countries along six dimensions of governance: Voice and Accountability, Political Stability and Absence of Violence, Government Effectiveness, Regulatory Quality, Rule of Law, Control of Corruption

Nonviolent and Violent Campaigns and Outcomes (NAVCO). 1900-2011. A "multi-level data collection effort that catalogues major nonviolent and violent resistance campaigns around the globe."

AidData. 1940s - present. "Over 1 million aid activities funded by more than 80 donors."

Sub-National African Education and Infrastructure Access Data. "Provides data on literacy rates, primary and secondary school attendance rates, access to improved water and sanitation, household access to electricity, and household ownership of radio and television at the subnational level, specifically the first administrative district level."

Armed Conflict and Post-Conflict Justice Dataset. 1946-2006. An overview of if, where, and how post-conflict countries address the wrongdoings committed in association with previous armed conflict. Tracks trials, truth commissions, reparations, amnesties, purges, and exiles.

OECD Better Life Data. 2013-2015, 34 OECD member states. Measures quality of life based on a number of social, economic, and political (including quality of democracy) indicators.
