IN WHAT KIND OF AREAS ARE PPPS ARE BEING BUILT?

Given the policy structure and private interest needed for PPPs to develop, commentators have wondered which areas (urban, inter-urban, or rural) have the attention of private investors. Data shows that transportation infrastructure being delivered by PPPs are primarily inter-urban transport projects (with the exception of Australia).

The above graphic depicts a breakdown of the types of transportation projects that are being built in respect to area. Looking at this graphic one can see that the majority of spending is on roads being built for inter-urban transportation projects (with approx. 200 billion US in costs). Roads being built in for the purpose of urban transport are next highest in terms of financial investment
(with approx. $70 billion US in costs).

 

WHAT IS THE PERCENT GROWTH OF OVER TIME OF URBAN AND INTER-URBAN AREAS?

During periods of economic boom transportation PPPs in urban areas have not experienced the same rate of growth as inter-urban transportation projects. During periods of economic shocks and crisis transportation PPPs in urban and inter-urban transport have experienced steep declines in the number of projects.
