FINANCING AND PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS.
ARE COUNTRIES CONTRACTING LOCAL OR FOREIGN SPONSORS FOR LARGE TI PPPS?
With public entities making large, long-term commitments to private entities one should consider the origin of these financial sponsors (i.e. whether they are local or foreign). Considering only transportation PPPs over $50 million it was discovered that the North America, South America, Africa and Australia typically contract foreign sponsors while European and Asian countries typically contract out to sponsors located within their own continents.
WHO ARE THE MAJOR PLAYERS SPONSORING TRANSPORTATION PPPS OVER $50 MILLION?
The previous graphic identified the origin of transportation PPP project sponsors for each continent. Based on this data it was discovered that the major sponsors financing these large-scale transportation projects came from six countries. In order of most projects to least the sponsor’s countries of origin were: Spain, France, Australia, Germany, China and England. So (as illustrated in the previous graphic) not only do Europe and Asia conduct the largest amount of transportation infrastructure projects on record but five of the top six sponsors come from either Europe or Asia.
