WHICH CONTINENTS ARE USING PPPS TO BUILD SUSTAINABLE PROJECTS IN URBAN AREAS?

susta

As the majority of transportation infrastructure PPPs are automobile-related projects (i.e. roads, bridges, and tunnels), critics question the role sustainability plays in PPPs and the interest they have in rail-related projects. For the purpose of this graphic automobile-related projects will be categorized as “unsustainable” and urban rail projects will be categorized as “sustainable”. Using urban data only the top three continents having the highest proportion of sustainable projects are Europe, Australia and Latin America, with sustainable projects accounting for 49%, 45%, and 42% of PPPs respectively.

A GLOBAL BREAKDOWN OF SUSTAINABLE AND UNSUSTAINABLE PROJECTS.

sustb

The above graphic depicts a breakdown by continent of project types in terms of number of projects and level of sustainability.  In total, roads accounted for half of all PPPs globally (occurring predominantly in Asia). Urban rail projects came in second, accounting for 30% of all projects (occurring most predominately in Europe). Bridges and tunnels projects proved to have the least activity accounting for only 12% and 8% of projects, respectively.

HOW MUCH ARE WE SPENDING ON SUSTAINABLE VS. UNSUSTAINABLE PROJECTS?

sustc
Although data show that 70% of global urban projects are unsustainable (i.e. automobile-related), budget spending on sustainable and unsustainable appears to be more even. This is because urban rail project are more expensive than other transportation project. Coloured in portions represent the years in which spending for unsustainable and sustainable projects proved to be most unbalanced with the mid-nineties PPPs investing much more on unsustainable projects and the early 2000s investing much more on sustainable projects.
