I am a zoologist and an ecological economist and I have worked on environmental issues for 20 years as a student and public servant. I became interested in the links between the economy and the environment in the 1990s. I have been worked on environmental and developmental issues for over 20 years as a student and public servant. My scientific research at Univ. of Dhaka focused on ecology and economy of fisheries in Bangladesh. This study showed the contribution of ecological services to commercial fishery sector, as well as the value of restoring ecosystem functions in the D-N-D canal, Dhaka (measuring only market based economic benefits).
My master’s social science research at York University has focused on Natural Resource Accounting (NRA) to deal with statistical information relevant to understanding the linkages between the environment and the economy. This research also helped drafting Handbook on Sources and Methods of Bangladesh System of National Accounting, 2007 and extensively enhanced Bangladesh’s case study in the emerging discipline of ecological economics.

Now I am a PhD student in Forestry at University of Toronto. In my doctoral research, I am focusing on the relationship between forest resource economics and forest resource management specifically through the concept of Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES). I will apply the demand side and supply side valuation method for ecosystem services to design payment structure for ES.

I have worked as Senior Economist at the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Deputy Director, Department of Environment, in the Bangladesh Ministry of Environment and Forest, since 2004.This followed several years as Senior Assistant Secretary, Assistant Commissioner in the Bangladesh Ministry of Land, Assistant Secretary in the Bangladesh Ministry of Establishment, where I undertook numerous natural resource and environment related policy analysis at the implementation stage. I have continued to provide technical advice in areas of natural resource accounting and environmental policy for sustainable development in Bangladesh.
