Artifact Analysis Methodology Applied To

Musical Bear Figurine Part 3

For the Topics In Material Culture course, the first term assignment requires the development of a personal artifact analysis methodology, which is to be applied to an object. The result of the application will be a thesis statement for a research paper and website to be produced next term. To navigate throughout the site and learn more, follow the main navigation links at the bottom of the page, to the main categories of this website.

This is the continuation of the application of my artifact analysis methodology on a single musical box, shown below. This analysis is divided among multiple pages due to overall length and ease of comprehension. To view the methodology produced, follow the Methodology button below. To view the other parts of this application, follow the Part 1 and Part 2 buttons.

Part 3: Interpretation

Image of something real? What does it stand for?

While not a total true image of something real, there are true elements. Bears are real, as are such clothing and accessories; however they are generally not joined in this manner. It stands for an earlier time and life, through appearance; and for a cute image of a bear.

Symbols by Participation:

This figurine is a symbol of a bear, because the face recalls the image of a bear, though different materials.

Referents by Convention:

This figurine refers to an old-fashioned style and earlier time because convention associates this form of dress and accessories with earlier times and old-fashioned traditions. Similarly it refers to the countryside, as opposed to the city, because of the song "Take Me Home Country Road", and the pattern of the dress, as well as the bonnet; all are by convention, associated with the countryside.

Significance:

A modern day creation recalling and idealizing earlier times.

Object relation to larger research question:

Why was this figurine matched with the tune "Take Me Home Country Road"? Why does this musical box incorporate movement? Why was it made with these materials, in this form?

What possible meanings can be derived?

A nostalgia for past times. A time when more care was exercised with clothing and accessories (trim). When people were closer to nature and the outdoors (flowers).

Psychological intent:

The figurine recalls simpler times an old-fashioned era country life.

Aesthetic intent:

The style of the bonnet, gown and apron recall earlier times, perhaps late 19th century, or Anne of Green Gables timeframe. Attention to detail signaled in trim: ribbon ties for the bonnet and apron, lace trim for the apron and dress.

Ideological intent:

Clearly a modern object Seen in materials: styrofoam, foam. Seen in method of production: artificial flowers, staples, machine sewing. Expressing a nostalgia for the past
