Bled

Here is a picture of the town Bled. Bled is located south of the Alps near the Austrian and Italian borders. Three things which make Bled a tourist attraction are: the old castle, the lake with the island in the middle, and the old church, which is on the island. This picture is taken from the castle.

Here is a better view
of the island and the
castle. The castle is on
the rock cliff (top left),
and you can clearly make
out the church and it's bell
tower (center).

This is a much better view of the Bled Castle. It is said that in 1004 only a tower stood in this spot. During the Middle Ages other towers and fortifications were built around that tower. This castle was the protecter of Bled and had a great view of it (as shown in the first picture). Today this castle serves as a tourist attraction for visitors to look over the lake and explore the rooms within the castle.

Here is a closer picture of the island and the church. The island is called Otok, and has the Church of the Assumption on it. This church is known for it's wishing bell. They say when you ring the bell you must think of a wish, and that wish will come true. This bell, from 1534, is placed above the altar of St. Catherine, it attracts many tourists.

This is a picture of a row boat, that seats around 15 people. This is the only method that you can reach the island without getting wet. There is a fee to use this boat, but if you want to you can swim across, which is harder than it sounds! The lake reaches a maximum depth of 30.6 meters, and the beach isn't that close. I would prefer to use the boat.
