Skule is around the corner. Three more weeks and I'll be back at the Chestnut (chest and nuts) for eight more comprehensive months of studying (or rather, attempting to) and the usual Friday night shenanigans. I'll be 19 soon, so that should open up a few more doors. I hope those Italian gangsters don't try to steal my pizza this time.
Unemployed life is fun. It is completely and willfully aimless. The only things occupying my time are painting and cleaning my basement, playing guitar, using the Internet, watching TV and sleeping in till 3. Sometimes reading some stuff. Everyone should try going to sleep at 5am for a few weeks. You start to feel disoriented because 7pm starts to feel like 11am. Routine will be a bit better though. I actually don't want to go back to Skule but I would still want to experience the life there.
Where is Bill Priddle? Bill Priddle used to be the guitarist of Treble Charger. Then, he quit last fall because Grieg Nori and him were having disputes over the band's direction. Greig wanted to continue the pop-punk thing they were doing (with Sum 41) while Bill wanted to go back to his indie roots. To quote him: "We started out being an indie rock band and I kind of thought we would stay that way. And I wasn't too happy going in the pop-punk direction, which didn't seem natural to me, it was just kind of forced." Supposedly, he's off still making his solo album. Last time people saw him, he was playing at a Broken Social Scene gig where Kevin Drew declared, "We've bought him back to indie rock."
And where is Kevin Shields? News surfaced this spring that he would be releasing a two compact disc compilation of digitally remastered material from My Bloody Valentine's Creation-era EPs, along with four new songs. That would be the first new original material from the Valentines in about 13 years, not counting his solo contribution to the Lost In Translation soundtrack. So far, nothing has been released. What happened? He went to produce an album for a band called The Beat Up. They helped him build his studio. But, he promises that he'll start soon after. Sure, Kevin, sure. It doesn't help that he responded the question of whether a new MBV record would ever come out with this answer: "Well, if the world doesn't end before we're all dead, then of course there will be quite a few records. But if the world ends in the next 10 years, who knows?" Another 10 years.
I thought I'd say this last because who knows, I might not post anything more for the duration of the month: Good luck to everyone I know going back to university for second year and those entering their frosh year. Have a good time, all you McMaster, Queen's, Windsor, Waterloo people. Shiv, enjoy your time in Ireland. Bring back some green beer, snag a leprechaun and steal his pot of gold. Oh, yeah, and gimme those 50 bucks you still owe me.
