While writing by Asians in North America dates back to the nineteenth century, the idea of “Asian North American literature” is a creation of the political and cultural activism of the past three decades. This course introduces students to Asian North American literature by examining the shifting paradigms through which it has been read, from the “cultural nationalism” of the 1970s to the global and transnational perspectives of the 1990s. Readings include fiction, poetry, and essays by Frank Chin, Carlos Bulosan, Maxine Hong Kingston, Fred Wah, Joy Kogawa, SKY Lee, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, Jessica Hagedorn, John Yau, and Karen Tei Yamashita.
