| I made this photograph
in
the summer of 2003 at Foodshare
Toronto's Field to Table gardens. Urban agriculture and the cultural landscape are themes that thread my everyday life and research together. This garden expresses social and political goals having to do with the possibilities for the use of land in post-industrial inner cities, the importance of integrating ecological and agricultural processes into the humanized landscapes where we live, and the fundamental centrality of everyday concerns such as food to all of our lives. This site is an introduction to my interests, and a place for me to organize my current projects (both written and photographic), most of which have to do with landscape -- urban agriculture (and beekeeping), cultural landscape, residential land use, and learning to live in cities. My interest in the political potential of everyday engagement with the social, natural, and productive processes of the environments of which we are a part has given me an appreciation of commons -- our shared resources whose stewardship we share, and an idea with which we have become very comfortable (using the internet, thinking about clean air, or agitating for better use of environments) but also rather glib. My involvement with Foodshare, where this photograph was taken, in food gardens growing on reclaimed industrial sites, has contributed to my understanding of the enormous amount of generosity and effort that goes into creating and maintaining functional commons, and also to my enthusiasm for these participatory, pluralistic, and potentially very democratic ways of organizing social and political action and knowledge. My thanks to all the people whose projects are mentioned, to Foodshare, and to the N-Vu software developers, whose open source software I used to create this site. All of the content of this site is governed by a creative commons copyright: except where specifically noted (the academic texts), all content may be reproduced as long as it is attributed to me and not used for profit. And I'd be interested to know where my material is being used, as I'm always interested in more communication with people whose interests coincide with mine! ![]() This work is licensed under a Creative Commons License. |
