Racial Profiling
& Border Security |
- is not aware of any racial profiling across
the border
- I asked what happens if people have problems and go to him;
what will he do for them?
- he used to work for employment immigration
- he will ask how the officers came to the conclusion they had
reached
- if something doesn’t make sense he would contact Immigration
and Customs. He knows the people well enough to try and explain
the polices and procedures
- He would ensure that the security message being used is the
same for everyone
- if a group feels that they are not being done properly, they
should be heard first hand
- he would facilitate a meeting in his meeting with the group
and the officials
- in the worst case scenario, he would go in person to discuss
the issues
- met with couple of US senators State Legislators to talk to
them about border security
- Since there are people who work on both sides of the border,
and it apparent that no customs officer wants to be the one
who let a dangerous group or person in.
- People have complained to him that the border security is
a little bit tight, but there is no visible ethnic minority
who comes to his office upset.
- Niagara Falls has 3 borders to overlook.
- When he met with the US officials they discussed how to make
the border as open as possible
- This on its own has an effect on the tourist industry |
Green bin initiative |
- Dealt with more by the regional government
- at provincial level we push and help local governments to
come up with these ideas
he is in support of it and uses it often |

Racial Profiling
& Border Security |
Border security
- Never heard of the issue of racial profiling over the border
before
o No one has indicated that that is an issue
- If a problem was brought up, he would take the information
and listen to the constituent or the individual and see what
he will be able to do from there.
- One of the things the MP can do is contact or write to the
Minister that is in control of border security
- Since the MP is a member of the Official Opposition, he would
have to contact a government minister, namely Ann Maclalen.
Racial profiling
- Not aware of this either |
Green bin initiative |
Green Bin initiative
- municipal level therefore not dealt with through the MP
- asked me to call city hall
- Called city hall at 905-356-7521, but told that the Green
Bin is not dealt with through them. Asked to call the Region
at 905-685-1571
I asked for some updates on the progress of the Green Bin
Initiative:
- There has been an increase in diversion rates
o diversion rate – amount of material going into designated
boxes…
- 2004 diversion rate numbers are currently being calculated,
as they just finished the waste audit on 3 neighborhoods
- Although the diversion rates are increasing, it doesn’t
mean all people are using the green build
o a lot of weed and yard waste so it might skew numbers
I was given the diversion rates between April and August
2003:
Prior to Green Bin
20% recycling
14% organics to composite
66% going to the landfill
After Green Bin implementation
24% recycling
24% organics
54% waste going to landfill
So increase in recycled and organic material
Amount of material being land fill has been decreased
In order to help this program, grey and blue boxes were provided,
as well as 2 different calendars in the same package. This
may be a reason why the diversion rates have not increased
more since some people look at the wrong calendar and have
not yet adapted to the new schedule and
A new campaign is to look at grass cycling
- promoting leaving grass clippings on the lawn and perhaps
will start banning the collection of grass from the side of
the street.
- main problem is odor, but leaving grass on the lawn is the
more cost effective way to deal with the issue.
- In this way there are no collection costs or processing
costs
- As well, compositing is the best way to handle organics
- we promote backyard composting, and using the curb side
for dairy products and meat products |
