the Twins - Baby A & Baby B aka "Fred & Barney"

  Our twin surprise

These next two photos were taken at 4.51pm.
The first photo shows Madeline being worked on by the doctors and nurses as they attach various monitoring devices and try to insert lines into her umbilical stump to give her nutrition and take blood. Because her placenta and umbilical cord were not 100% there was major problem getting anything into an artery there so they gave up and all she got was the nutrition line. You can get an idea of just how small she is by the size of all the adult hands around her. She's having her breathing tube put in because her right lung hadn't opened and when it was inflated a hole opened letting air into her chest cavity. They cleared that up over the next couple of days but more on that later.

Here's Emma being worked on to put in her sensors and lines. She was actually breathing under her own power for a while but to be safe they gave her a breathing tube as well and put her on a ventilator.

It's now 5.48pm and Madeline has almost all the bells and whistles attached. They are still trying to get that second line into her umbilical stump so she has a couple of hours here in the assessment room before she gets a nice warm isolette like her sister is about to get!

Emma is in her crib and looking very comfy at 6.33pm

So at 8.03pm Nurse Betty - would we lie about that! - and Mike finally wheel Nancy into the assessment room to meet Madeline for the first time.

So with that we took Nancy back to her room to get some sleep. Mike kept going back to the NICU to look in on the girls and report back to their Mum. Around 8.30pm Madeline was finally placed in her crib right beside Emma.
