the Twins - Baby A & Baby B aka "Fred & Barney"

  Our twin surprise

We seem to be getting a lot of shots of Emma and not as many of Maddy. Most of that's because Maddy is usually facing the rear of the crib when we come in. As she gains strength she will tolerate being handled better and we will be able to get more shots of her.
For now here's her sister Emma again looking very happy to only have a feeding tube running into her for now. Isn't she beautiful!?
Emma
Emma loves to move around and tries very hard to roll over which is not something a little baby of less than a week old can accomplish, not that this stops her from trying! She also grabs onto anything she can get her hands on including her feeding tube which she pulls out a couple of times per day.
Emma
While she was having her bedding changed Emma was placed on a scale and Nancy got to hold her a little more than usual.

Someone's not happy!
Emma
Back in her crib and wearing her toque - that's a beanie to those of you outside Canada! - she looks very rested even though her dad keeps bothering her for photos! The nurses found some sheep skin for Emma and Maddy to use although it's seen better days from the look of it!
Emma
Nancy looking after Madeline while her nurse readies her new crib. They change the cribs over every week to help prevent infections. The old crib is taken out and stripped down to be cleaned and disinfected, then reassembled and brought back to go into the rotation again. This is Maddy's first crib change. Emma had her's done the day before.
Nancy & Madeline
While she was out of her crib Madeline was held by her mum.
Nancy & Madeline
If her nose looks a little funny it's because the nasal prongs of the CPAP are a little big for her! Not only that but the whole contraption presses up on her nose giving it a snout like appearance! Poor little girlie. The nurses are trying to find something that will fit better and not distort her nose. Isn't she a cutie!?
Nancy & Madeline
Maddy had her first round of physiotherapy today to start correcting her leg and arm contractures caused by the severe lack of fluid she'd endured since week 16 of the pregnancy. They are taping her feet to begin turning them over to their proper position but it will be a long and painful process. She has to have a small does of morphine administered to get her through the procedure but she does appear to be handling it well. She's tough little nut!
The inside ligaments, tendons and muscles of her ankles are all shorter than normal and of course all those on the outside of her ankles are stretched a long, long way past normal. So surgery will be required to tighten up the outside eventually. That and the treatment of her legs and hips will be handled by the orthopedic team from Sick Kids Hospital who will see Maddy sometime in her second week.
Her arm problems are to be looked after by the plastic surgery team from Sick Kids. Why plastics? Because the doctor who leads the plastics team also specialises in contractures of the arms.
Maddy back in her crib. Look at the size of the CPAP hardware on her! No wonder her poor little nose was getting smooshed.
Madeline
We decided to let Maddy rest after all the excitement of having her crib changed and her mum hold her so back over to Emma we went. She loves grabbing dad's fingers!
