Essay 2

Write an essay of no more than 2,500 words (incl. footnotes) in which you explore one of the following oppositions.

Your answer must refer to one Austen novel and a second text by one of her contemporaries (Burney, Wollstonecraft or Inchbald). You must not write about the text you discussed in essay

1.     Nature/artifice

2.     Inside/outside

3.     Freedom/slavery

4.     Wealth/poverty

5.     Legitimate/illegitimate

Notes:

i) Your essay must construct a clear and logical argument about your chosen texts – and it should seek to convince the reader of the validity of this argument.

ii) Your essay should show evidence of, and an engagement with, critical reading.

iii) Essays which exceed the word count will be penalized.

iv) The best essays demonstrate an ability to interweave close textual analysis with broader argumentative commentary.
