Broncho-alveolar Cell Cancer

A subtype of adenocarcinoma of the lung.  Pathologically, it cannot easily be differentiated from other adenocarcinomas.

CXR Findings:  Presents in one of three common patterns

  1. large lobular lung mass often with air bronchograms
  2. multiple moderate sized pulmonary nodules
  3. diffuse small nodular pattern

It may be associated with pleural effusions and metastatic hilar or mediastinal adenopathy.

Treatment:  Difficult especially if diffuse form.  Chemotherapy is the mainstay.

"Aunt Sophies":

  1. metastatic lung disease
  2. lymphoma
  3. certain pneumoniae
  4. amyloidosis
