Case
Summary
Diagnosis: Left Pleural Effusion
Clinical hints:
Most often seen with heart and kidney failure, pneumonias,
trauma, collagen vascular diseases (e.g. SLE), and pulmonary
infarcts. Need to know if exudate or transudate. (This patient
had pneumonia.)
Radiological Pearls:
- often bilateral in heart failure
- decubitus views show mobility
- if pericardial effusion, may be SLE
- empyema may look the same
Films were kindly provided by Dr. W. J. Weiser.
