About Jim Delaney

Jim Delaney

Jim Delaney is an Acting Assistant Secretary of the Governing Council at the University of Toronto.

Since 1985, Jim has been involved in a variety of projects and programs relating to student affairs and services, student life and campus organizations, information services, policy development and policy-related initiatives, and alcohol education, issues and policies. Jim has worked at the University of Toronto since May, 1988.

As a student at the University of Toronto, Jim was involved in student activities and student government (including one year serving on the executive of the Students' Administrative Council, the University's full-time undergraduate student government). While a student, he was also involved in the development of the University's first campus alcohol policy.

As Acting Assistant Secretary of the Governing Council, Jim is working with the Secretary and with governance and administrative leadership at the UTM and UTSC campuses to develop orientation and education programming to support new governance processes at those campuses.

In his former position, as Director of the Office of the Vice-Provost, Students, Jim handled a variety of student policy initiatives, provided advice on non-academic policy issues, oversaw matters concerning the University's relationships with campus organizations, and managed issues related to potentially controversial campus events and freedom of speech.

Jim holds a B.Sc. in Human Biology from the University of Toronto and an M.A. in Conflict Analysis and Management from Royal Roads University in Victoria, British Columbia.

Jim has presented national workshops on alcohol policies and education for the Canadian Association of College and University Student Services (CACUSS) and BACCHUS Canada, for which he also co-developed a number of training and education programs. Jim has delivered training programs for staff and students dealing with alcohol-related issues and risk at a number of Canadian post-secondary institutions.

Jim has served on the board and as president of the Canadian Association of College and University Student Services (CACUSS) and on the board and as president of the Student Affairs and Services Association (SASA). He has also been a member of the BACCHUS Canada board of directors and served as chair of the Student Life Education Company board.

In 2003, Jim received SASA's "Outstanding Service Award." In the summer of 2006, he received the CACUSS "Award of Honour," that organization's highest honour. In spring 2011, Jim was the recipient of the Royal Roads University "Chancellor's Award" which is presented to one graduating student in the M.A. in Conflict Analysis and Management program each year in recognition of having achieved the highest academic performance.

Jim is the proud father to two boys, Michael and Nicholas, and loving partner to Deborah.

In recent years, Jim has rekindled his love of rock drumming and occasionally enjoys playing in a band as part of the League of Rock.
