Project management/Problem Trackers/Job Ticketing/Help Desk
Project management and job ticketing software is used exensively in the software industry to track bugs and feature requests and assign them to engineers and developers. This software is identical in function to the 'work order' tracking modules in most CMMS's. Some project management and help desk applications also provide discussion forums and the ability to develop 'knowledge bases', i.e. repositories of technical information. These features, combined with a good calendaring, event scheduling, and inventory tracking application would supply virtually all the functions of a high end CMMS.
