ASSIGNMENT 4

Writing an abstract and bibliography

This assignment is designed to help you develop your research plan for this course, to organise your ideas, and to learn about writing an abstract and a bibliography appropriately for the field of linguistics.

For your research project, you are strongly encouraged to work with 1 or 2 other class members. If you have already selected your research partners, please do this assignment with them. Turn in 1 copy with all your names and student numbers on the top of it.

Step 1:  Read 5 abstracts from sociolinguistics journals, such as:

You can either look at (recent) past issues in the Periodical Stacks, or the latest versions in the Current Issues section on the Ground Floor of Robarts Library.  Alternatively, you can access journals online through the U of T library website: http://content.library.utoronto.ca/ .

Note: You don't have to choose articles for this assignment that are relevant to your own research project, but it might be helpful. The main goal here is to see how to write an abstract in linguistics and how to cite references properly.

Step 2:  For practice in bibliography compilation, please submit a bibliography listing the 5 articles whose abstracts you read.  Choose a format from any one of the above journals and use it consistently to write your bibliography.  Alternatively, if you know of at least 5 relevant sources for your project, you can prepare that bibliography instead.  This might include some papers from our class packet, but would need to include others as well.

Step 3:  Think about what's in an abstract and how abstracts are organized. More tips on writing abstracts.

Step 4: THE BIG ONE:Write an abstract for your research project.  Follow the format you have just learned about that you think most appropriate. Be sure to include an informative title for your research project!
