About My Research

As a part of my research, I am looking into the implications of REDD on community forestry initiatives in India. Reduced Emission from Forest Degradation and Deforestation (REDD) is now increasingly being accepted as a popular climate change mitigation mechanism in the international negotiations. Its logic is simple: the Northern industrial countries would pay for conservation of forests in tropical south. Such forests are expected to act as major carbon sinks that may help absorb the GHG emissions happening in the North.

However many see such market based solution being ridden with issues related to injustice and inequity and predict that such a mechanism would further add to the marginalisation of forest dependent communities and would result in ultimate commodification of forest and nature. My research is situated amidst this dilemma and debate. I am in a process of refining my research proposal and shall keep you posted further on this in my web space.
