GTA-MSA, the
council of Greater Toronto Area Muslims Students' Associations,
was initiated In May of 1999. There are currently 5 MSAs across
the GTA. Prior to May 1999, each of these MSAs operated independently
of each other, despite having very similar in goals. Inter-MSA
communication was poor, scheduling conflicts were frequent, and
collaborative efforts between MSAs were few and far between. Perhaps
the most significant problem was the duplication of efforts by
each MSA chapter.
Bringing
together 5 regional MSAs, unified under GTA-MSA, has given the
MSAs greater strength and the ability to pool resources. Our vision
to unite the MSAs through this initiative has drastically improved
communication, collective growth and training, and has led to
further collaboration towards joint projects. GTA-MSA has spawned
a new-found spirit of cooperation.
GTA-MSA has
the potential of putting a face on the Muslim student and bringing
Muslim youth from across Toronto under one banner, the banner
of Islam Insha Allah.
GTA-MSA is
not a separate organization, but rather an independent collective
forum. Each MSA chapter is a full and equal member of the council,
represented by one selected individual from that chapter. These
representatives, along with a selected Chairperson, form the committee
responsible for the administrative duties of GTA-MSA.
