Music Interlude

Chamber concert at noon, Walter Hall, University of Toronto, June 4th, 2004

Faculty of Tafelmusik Summer Institute

Tafelmusik's noon concert at Walter Hall of U of T is a treat. A selection of 17th and 18th century sonatas for the combinations of violin, cello, woodwind (dulcian), keyboard and continuo are included. Linking the simple profundity of the earlier period and the passionate intellectuality of the late period (as in J.S. Bach’s music), the lyricism of the south and the spirituality of the north, the folk tradition and the aristocratic deliberation, the highly enjoyable program includes very familiar Corelli's "La Follia" (a very fresh and profound performance) as well as curios like Merula's Ciaconna, Boddecker's dulcian sonata, etc. Very fine performance. Very fine musicians. Among them, there is that Québec harpsichordist, Olivier Fortin, who is easily the most handsome and elegant young man in this country. He has his goatee shaved since last time. His demeanor remains detached yet gentle and heart-warming. The exquisite music, such as Antoine Forquerary le Fils 's Pieces de clavecin, is perfectly embodied in his delicate, exquisite, sensual physique, his physical movement, even the mysterious smile of his when he bows to the thundering applause from a thankful audience.
