Cybercrime is an increasing issue world wide. Millions of online users are victimized by criminal activity each year, and as more people become connected to social networking websites, such as Facebook and Myspace, there is an increasing correlation between the increase in popularity of social networking websites and the increase in cybercrime. In 2008 alone the cost of account frauds that occurred in the United States totaled to $31 billion dollars (Javelin Strategy and Research, 2009). Every year cybercrime numbers increase as social networking websites continue to increase in popularity. There are over 200 million Facebook and Myspace users world wide, all in which share personal information and pictures of themselves in the global village in which social networking websites have created. Social networking websites have created a gateway for cybercrime making it easier for hackers to access personal information from millions of people world wide. Identity theft, password security and invasion of privacy are three largest forms of cybercrime and is growing to a global issue with the increasing popularity of social networking websites. Online security companies are on high alert with the growing spread of cybercrime world wide. Effectively protecting yourself and limited the information that you post online is critical to acknowledge before you become a victim of a cyber crime.
