Barry Rawn's Trip to Nigeria- Page 3page1page2page3

We didn't spend long on the plateau, but it was a beautiful spot. Suitable for a picture of my beloved! Some troublemakers had made their mark on this badly-in-need-of-a-rinse photovoltaic panel, though (right). After another 4 hour car ride, we were back in Calabar in time for Christmas.

There are a lot of churches everywhere, in a huge variety of buildings. One finds Deeper Life, Church of Christ, Assemblies of God, and many other denominations, including the one shown in the picture to the left. For Christmas, we went to a Church where the brother of Mrs Orok (right most in the picture) is a pastor. For more details check out the journal entry.

There were a lot of lizards, everywhere! They were really neat. Some of them had amazing colour combinations, like red, blue and green. They were quite fast, and as happy and mobile on vertical surfaces as they were on horizontal surfaces. Two very different images: the otherwordly garb of a masquerade character, typical around Christmas time in Calabar streets, seen here during a street carnival. To the right, a classroom in a rural school we visited whose manager wanted to talk to us about renewable energy power options.

We made a number of trips outside of Calabar. One involved three days in the vicinity of Rhoko Camp, a special jungle location maintained by the NGO CERCOPAN. There are many more rainforest pictures than I could put up here. Most of it wasn't as intrepid as the first picture might suggest. There are several rainforest movies that you should check out as well. The upper middle picture details the structure of a column of ants that we observed; you can see large soldier ants forming a fence to either side of a stream of regular sized ants. The soldier ants have nasty big horns/mandibles on them. The movie shows the eerie speed with which the column moved within. The impressive buttress roots of a tree surround me in the right most picture. They are a necessary adaptation to the thin, weak soil of the rainforest.
