The Community Health Outreach (CHO) Program is
a community-based initiative aimed to promote healthy lifestyle habits as
well as educate Guyanese people about hypertension and diabetes. Medical
students visit local health clinics on days where chronic disease patients
will be seen. They give standard, prepared, informed and interactive talks
in order to educate them on ways that will enable them to live healthy and
happy lives. The limited number of medical staff present at the clinics to
treat the overwhelming number of patients often results in a short amount of
time that a patient can receive adequate information and consultation
regarding their condition. The aim of these talks is to provide more
in-depth information. These talks focus mostly on encouraging individuals
to take action to alter their lifestyle (diet and exercise), and how they
can use their medication properly to ensure that they can properly manage
their condition. In addition to clinic talks, nutrition workshops on
diabetes and hypertension were also developed and implemented. |
