The Community Health Outreach (CHO) Program
was initiated in 2000 by Amy Cheng, a student at the University of Toronto,
in collaboration with the Guyana Red Cross, as a small community based
initiative aimed to promote healthy lifestyle habits, and hypertension
awareness and early prevention amongst the Guyanese people. Volunteers visit
Guyana during the summer months to continue to develop and implement the
project.
The project became instantly successful, and
grew to involve various government and non-governmental organizations,
including the Guyana Ministry of Health. |
Since 2002, the Community Health Outreach team
has been in collaboration with the Guyana Red Cross. The team consists of medical student volunteers from the University of Toronto and
the University of Ottawa. This year, we are expanding the
project to involve medical students from Albany Medical College, and Master
of Public Health Sciences students from the University of Toronto. |
