A human being is part of a whole, called by us the 'Universe,' a part limited in time and space. We experience ourselves, our thoughts and

feelings as something separate from the rest. A kind of optical delusion of consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us,

restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from the prison by

widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. The true value of a human being is

determined by the measure and the sense in which they have obtained liberation from the self.

We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if humanity is to survive.

An Introduction

Author: Hehbert Usana

It is said the world grows more dangerous each and every single day. It may or may not be a profound truth, but there is no denying that there are many problems and conflicts here on Earth that are yet to be resolved. There is overconsumption, pollution (chemical warfare affecting our food, air, and fresh water supplies), social distinctions (class/status, race, gender, rich versus poor), religious establishments that isolate people from one another even though they represent ideas that are similar to each other, wars we rarely hear about but do occur within the various regions of Earth’s landmass, domestic violence and abuse, animal species becoming extinct, climate change, and the list goes on.

What must and what can we do to change things? When I first gave this question some thought, I was uncertain myself. But what I realized is that it doesn't matter where you begin, the most important thing to do is to take the initial step. Our planet is just one miniscule part of a larger galaxy, which in turn is part of an expansive universe with many other galaxies. As the videos on the right have pointed out, human beings have their long history of atrocities, successes, failures, and especially change; whether it has been positive or negative is very subjective. All this history unfolded on this single planet we call Earth; the only home we've ever known. With such a long and rich history, I am very certain that we are capable of building a better future for ourselves and for our future generations.

To a technologist or inventor, it has been positive change; the wealthy individuals who can afford such technologies that supposedly make life easier and maybe help them amass wealth, might agree. To a humanitarian or activist, we still lack compassion hence we ignore those in suffering and we continue to wage war and kill thousands if not millions of people, as well as destroy our environment in the process. You might argue that you have never been on the battlefield in military clothing with a weapon in your arms running through streets of chaos to eliminate the “enemy", the "target” (who by the way are still human beings), thus you do not lack compassion and you have not killed thousands or even millions.

If this is what you believe, you should really ask yourself this question, “Am I a human being; am I part of the realm of reality and for that matter; the circle of life?” If you answered yes, you should know that you have taken part indirectly in such atrocities by not acting against them. We all live on the same planet and we’re all in this together; this is something we definitely share in common. As Nkosi Johnson (February 4, 1989 - June 1, 2001) once said while addressing a large crowd during an International AIDS conference, "We are all the same. We are not different from one another. We all belong to one family. We love and we laugh. We hurt and we cry. We live and we die." The seventh UN Secretary-General, Kofi Atta Annan, put it this way, "We may have different religions, different languages, different colored skin, but we all belong to one human race."

I'm sure like most people you have an imagined self-importance and you believe the old adage “you must help yourself”. In this way you allow greed and ignorance to guide your life. But consider this, throughout the history of our species, we have thrived and survived by being a social species and by working together toward a common goal. If otherwise, we would have been easy picking for predators and Mother Nature. In fact, through natural and sexual selection our species evolved to become one of the most intelligent and socially active species on Earth as a means of survival. Hence, by ignoring the devastating realities in our world you have ultimately decided with many others, one of the pathways to the future of our planet. A pathway wrought with havoc.

I do not wish to preach (for I am sure it has become cliché within our societies through various mediums), but rather I am here to promote a better future for everyone especially for future generations to come. I hope that we will acquire an awareness and an attitude that will accomplish this.

I welcome you to this website! The world is huge, the pool of ideas is expansive, but there is one clear message. We all want better and brighter futures for each and every person living on this planet including ourselves.
