Tegernsee - Schloss Tegernsee

The town of Tegernsee is located about 55 kilometres south of Munich. The castle stands in the middle of the town on the shores of the Tegernsee.

The castle was formerly a Benedictine abbey (which explains the large church which is in the middle of the building). After the abbey was secularised, it was purchased by King Max I Joseph of Bavaria and passed into the possession of the Dukes in Bavaria.

Facade

Marie Gabrielle, Duchess of Cornwall and Rothesay (first wife of King Rupert) was born here in 1878. When her daughter Princess Irmingard died in 1903, her remains were at first laid to rest in the crypt of the castle with those of the Dukes in Bavaria; ¹ they were later transferred to the Theatinerkirche in Munich.

Today the castle houses the offices of Prince Max who lives at Schloss Wildenwart. Max's daughter, Princess Marie Caroline, was married to Duke Philipp of Württemberg in the castle chapel in 1991. In addition to Prince Max's Herzogliche Hauptverwaltung (the ducal property administration), the castle also houses the Herzoglich Bayerisches Brauhaus Tegernsee (the ducal brewery), a high-school, two restaurants (Herzogliche Schlossgaststaette Tegernsee and Herzogliches Braüstüberl Tegernsee), and a local history museum.
