A Jacobite Gazetteer - BavariaThe Royal Family's connection with Bavaria begins in 1842 when King Francis I (later Duke Francis V of Modena) married Princess Adelgunde of Bavaria, third daughter of King Ludwig I of Bavaria. King Francis and Queen Adelgunde visited Bavaria on numerous occasions, and in 1862 acquired a residence there. In 1868 King Francis' niece Mary Theresa married Queen Adelgunde's nephew Prince Ludwig of Bavaria (later King Ludwig III of Bavaria). Seven years later Mary Theresa succeeded her uncle as Queen Mary IV and III. From that time until the present the Royal Family has maintained their chief residences in Bavaria.
