In Ontario every new driving license applicant is automatically entered in to the GLS(Graduated Licensing System). This system has three stages which require to be completed prior to receiving a full class G license.

During stage one, a driver has to pass a knowledge test consisting of Ontario road rules and traffic signs questions. Once this knowledge test has been successfully completed a driver receives a G1 license. During stage two a driver has to pass an Ontario road test. Upon successful passing of the road test a driver receives a class G2 license. For the third stage a driver is eligible to take the second road test to graduate to the full class G license after 12 months. However this time period can be reduced to 8 months by taking a ministry approved course provided by driving schools in Ontario while a driver is still in the learner's (class G1 license)stage.
