Scholarly Interests and Projects
Medical Education
Current | Development of a system of peer review for educational administration in the clerkship setting. Faculty development project for the Department of Medicine clerkship committee. Leader of development group. Chair: Dr. Danny Panisko. Funding: N/A. |
This innovative project will allow members of the clinical clerkship committee to document successes in scholarly administration of their educational programs. |

2006 – current | Qualitative inquiry into the views of subspecialty program directors regarding the desirable competencies of core Internal Medicine trainees in the ambulatory setting. Principal investigator. Supervisor: Dr. Glen Bandiera. Funding: TBD. |
This project will add to the current understanding of the role of core ambulatory training in preparation for future training experiences. |

2007 – current | Development of a renewed system of ambulatory experiences for trainees in the core Internal Medicine training program, University of Toronto. Co-leader of development team, reporting to Dr. Kevin Imrie. Funding: Ongoing support from the Department of Medicine. |
This 2 year development effort responds to trainees’ perceived needs in ambulatory training, and attempts to further this training while reducing conflict with the overall rotation schedule. |

2005 – 2007 | Development of a novel Web-based method of communication between residents and nurses in the General Medicine CTU of Mount Sinai Hospital. Leader of development team. Funding: Mount Sinai Hospital Informatics Department, in kind support. |
This project successfully reduced pager-related interruptions to trainee and nurse workflow while improving documentation of communication in the CTU setting. A major benefit was seen in reduction of interruptions to teaching. This led to a paper and presentation, with subsequent interest in collaboration between Toronto academic health centres to develop this concept further. |
Other Areas
1999 - 2006 | Master’s Thesis – Descriptive analysis of the Ontario Drug Benefit program database for the pattern of use of interferon for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C in Ontario. Successful defense in June 2006. Supervisor: Dr. Allan Detsky. |
1992 – 1994 | Hepatology – (I) prospective study of hepatitis B patients’ serum for inhibition of PCR detection of hepatitis B viral DNA; (II) retrospective review of e-antibody positive hepatitis B patients’ clinical course and liver enzyme abnormalities. Supervisor: Dr. Jenny Heathcote. |
1991 – 1993 | Paediatric Neurology – retrospective study of cerebral blood flow assessed by SPECT scan and its relationship to EEG abnormalities in children with benign seizure disorders. Supervisor: Dr. Paul Hwang. |

2006 – current | Site Director, PGY4 General Internal Medicine Fellowship Program, Mount Sinai Hospital |
2005 – current | Site Director, Internal Medicine Clerkship (Phase II), Mount Sinai HospitalDeveloped a needs-based system for determining the content of weekly physical examination rounds. |
2003 – current | Director, Core Resident Integrated Scholarly Program (CRISP), University of Toronto Department of Medicine.Redeveloped this pre-existing course to include a PGY3 component and change its focus to the non-Medical Expert CanMEDS roles. Multiple new teaching modules and formats were introduced. A website for ongoing self-education on the CRISP modules was developed. I continue to be responsible for ongoing course design and evolution of methods and content in response to trainees’ needs. Improved evaluations and greater resident participation have resulted over the past 5 years. |
2000 – current | Medical and Educational Director, Ambulatory Internal Medicine Group Practice, Mount Sinai HospitalContinuously implemented many changes in environment, curriculum and evaluation to improve the value of this weekly educational activity to trainees’ overall experience in the Internal Medicine program. |
2003 – current | Leader of a collaborative working group of attendings from the Ambulatory Internal Medicine Group Practices across the Internal Medicine program.Facilitated consensus on initiatives designed to harmonize the educational practices employed at all the teaching sites. |
