The research program in my laboratory has focused on ion channels (>20 years), CNS-related inflammation (>15 years), and studies of ischemic stroke and intracerebral hemorrhage (>5 years). The current scope ranges from in vivo models --> cell cultures --> molecules. Projects combine two or more principle techniques, and will appeal to students and postdoctoral fellows with backgrounds in neuroscience, stroke, cell physiology, electrophysiology, molecular biology/biochemistry. We have been continually well-supported by grants from national granting agencies (CIHR, HSF, NSERC), as well as scholarships and fellowships.

Current technical approaches:

Animal studies: surgeries, therapeutic treatments, immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy

in vitro studies: live-cell imaging (e.g., migration, phagocytosis, Ca²⁺ signaling, cell killing), deconvolution microscopy, fluorescence assays for cell functions (e.g., secretion of cytokines, reactive oxygen & nitrogen species), patch-clamp electrophysiology with fluorescence imaging, FACS analysis, ion channel blockers/modulators

Molecular and biochemical studies: microarray, real-time RT-PCR, nanostring, Westerns,immunoprecipitation, ELISAs, laser capture, transfection/viral-mediated infection, RNA interference, inhibitors & activators of signaling pathways
