Research Project: Paper Outline

This assignment is not optional (it cannot be the one you choose to skip.)

Figure out all the sections your paper will need. The idea is to get from the position of "need to start writing" to "need to finish writing."

Fill in what you’ve got from previous assignments and other work: abstract, intro (from proposal), parts of your methods (from proposal), biblio… The more you fill in, the more feedback I can provide.

Tips:

  • Provide a title and page numbers.
  • Number your sections as well as giving them titles-- makes it easier to discuss and give feedback.
  • Prose does NOT need to be polished.
  • Some sections may be in outline form.
  • Some sections might have your notes like “fix explanation of speaker sample” or “expand description of statistical interpretation.” Maybe even include who is responsible for such tasks (for group projects).

You may wish to refer back to the Schleef & Meyerhoff paper about the process of sociolinguistic research as well as this outline of a prototypical sociolinguistic research paper. (Note that not all aspects of the long version may be relevant to all papers!)
