Linguistics at U of T

Essay with a Focus on Methods:
Linguistics and Second Language Teaching

How can linguistics be brought into the curriculum of a TESOL course?

For this assignment, you will design and describe a lesson for a TESOL course. The lesson can be about any aspect of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. A good essay will make connections to topics covered in lecture and/or reading assignments for the course.

  1. You must explicitly discuss at least one linguistic rule or pattern that will be covered in the lesson. Indicate whether it is phonetic, phonological, morphological, syntactic or pragmatic (or a combination of several levels).
  2. Specify the age (range) and proficiency level of student you are targeting. Make sure the assignment is appropriate to this group.
  3. Explain the points that should be made to the students and/or teachers.
  4. Describe the activity or activities that will be used for making these points. Give specific examples of what will be taught and what students will be asked to do. That is, write up a lesson plan that shows how to teach the points you mentioned in #3.

Please print a copy of the relevant grading rubric (posted in Blackboard, under Assignments) and turn it in, stapled to your assignment.
This will make sure you have had a chance to look over how we will evaluate you, and make the grading process go more smoothly.
