Essay with a Focus on sources and citations:
How slang changes
How can we learn about how words, especially slang words, change their meaning over time?
- Read Question #17 on p. 319 of the textbook (Denham & Lobeck 2010).
- Respond to that question completely, in an essay of one or two pages.
- Think back to the first assignment about thesis statements and supporting evidence.
- You will find many useful resources if you search for "Slang dictionary" in the U of T library's online catalog.
- Experiment with the "Refine results" tab on the left to help find different types of resources.
- Use at least three different sources to get your information. At least two must be scholarly sources (books or refereed journal articles) with identified authors/editors.
- For each example you give, use a proper inline citation.
- Provide the complete citation for each resource you mention in an alphabetized bibliography at the end of your paper.
--> Refer to the excerpt by Eschholz et al. for directions on correctly documenting your sources. This describes both when you need to do so, and how. (Bb > Content > Academic Resources > About citing sources properly).
Please print a copy of the relevant grading rubric (posted in Blackboard, under Assignments) and turn it in, stapled to your assignment.
This will make sure you have had a chance to look over how we will evaluate you, and make the grading process go more smoothly.
Assignment length: 1-2 pages.
