Scheduling LIN251 into your life
In our chaotic, online lives, it's good to plan a regular schedule for getting stuff done. For a successful approach to LIN251 this Fall, I suggest:
When |
What |
Details |
Sometime Thursday to Monday |
Your reading and writing |
- Read the assigned reading for the coming Monday class, and make notes
- Complete any assignment due on Monday
- Take a few minutes to just think about language and sociolinguistics: make some connections between class and your life (you might want to share some of these in lecture, tutorial, office hours, Quercus Discussion board)
|
Monday before 1pm |
Prep for class |
- Quickly review what you've read, and prepare files (assigned reading, your notes -- including any questions you want to ask, course slides)
- Turn in homework, if due this week [always due before class on Mondays]
- Read the next assignment's instructions early. Then you can ask questions in lecture, in tutorial, or during office hours, well before the due date.
|
Monday 1-3pm |
Lecture | - This will consist of both "traditional" lecture by the professor and interactive small-group activities (discussion, problem-solving, comparing perspectives)
|
Wednesday (9am, 4pm, 5pm or 6pm) |
Tutorial |
- Discuss course content
- Practice skills
- Ask questions (about content, about assignments)
- Review concepts
|
Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday |
office hours |
- A chance for the students and professor to get to know each other a little better.
-
Come ask questions about course content
-
Connect sociolinguistics to your life
-
This is also the place to discuss any "irregularities" or problems, including missed class, extensions for work, accomodations...
