Activity
“active
element”
The blackboard becomes most effective as a mediator when in use.
Once the instructor stands by the board and begins to write, the viewer
is immediately engaged on some level. The audience watches the gestures
and movements, hears the sound of the chalk hitting the board, and at
times smells the chalk dust wafting throughout the room. This so-called
“active-element”, a term used by Lawrence Rinder, connects
the viewer with an idea and influences their relationship with the instructor.
