Blackboards have developed considerably over the years, and influenced the progress of associated objects. The material composition of boards has altered, with green boards chiefly constructed from wood, largely replacing slate in more recent decades. In the contemporary context, slate blackboards are actively being replaced by green boards, white boards, projections and computer technology. Blackboard resurfacing, involving a light sanding of the surface to get rid of embedded chalk, has allowed owners to retain the boards. Whiteboards, which allow instructors to apply and erase felt-tip markers, have become increasingly prevalent. The use of technologies during the twentieth century continues alongside the development of computers in educational institutions. Blackboards, and associated items, have also found a place in pubs and restaurants, demonstrating their adaptability.
