Looking into the Future |
Public Awareness and Early Detection
Hypertension and Diabetes are two of the major
chronic illnesses in Guyana. However, the public has little knowledge about
theses diseases and its associated morbidities and mortalities. |
 |
What needs to be done:
-
Present
and develop hypertension and diabetes mellitus health promotion talks,
brochures, and teaching aids that focus on diet, exercise, and lifestyle
modification techniques.
|
|
Patient Compliance and Decrease of
Complications |
|
Individuals attend clinic every month, and
their blood pressure is measured and their medications are reassessed.
Many of the patients are elderly, undereducated, and without full
comprehension of their condition, or the reason for taking their medication. |
 |
What needs to be
done:
- Interactive workshops
to make information practical (ex. cooking classes, develop and teach a
simple stretching program which is safe and appropriate for elderly
patients in order to promote physical activity and lifestyle
modification).
|
|
Training of Health Care Practioners &
Program Sustainability |
|
The Guyana Red Cross has limited staff and
monetary resources. Overseas medical volunteers solely run the CHO
program. There are very little continual and sustained efforts during the
times when there are no volunteers. In order for a health promotion program
to be successful, the efforts must be sustained, and the community acquires
ownership of the project.
|
|
What needs to be
done:
-
Workshops to update
management techniques of hypertension amongst nurses, and physicians.
-
Establish concrete
partnerships with local agencies and actions plans for the CHO Project
(ex. training of Red Cross youth group members).
