Self – Reflection
In this fast-paced society, have we ever thought of taking a few minutes to self-reflect on a day's progress? Self-reflection is a key element in making progress towards our goals. So what is self-reflection? It is self-evaluating one's actions, thoughts, and character. For instance, when a friend asks for your help, but we are too busy to help the friend, as a result, we ignore the friend. We ask ourselves: was I considerate and helpful to my friend? It is by frequently self-reflecting in which “we can transform our wrongful behaviour into goodness.”1 In addition, it is “only by diligently practicing self-reflection and self-evaluation, and by continuously making demands on ourselves, can we progress in strengthening our morals and broadening our knowledge.”2
So how do we self-reflect?
- Take at least 10 minutes a day to self-reflect on the bus, before you sleep, anywhere…
- We can ask ourselves: Did I perform many beneficial or harmful deeds today? Was I considerate and friendly today? Did I harm anyone in any way through my speech and/or action? Did I make any improvements towards my goal?
Self-reflection is a quick yet simple and easy task, which can help monitor our everyday thoughts and behaviour. We can then naturally make improvements and correct ourselves accordingly. Give self-reflecting a try!
