Corpus Presentation Guidelines

Pairs of students will introduce corpora to the class. Presentations should focus on how the corpus could be used to study language contact effects. Although it would be great to have a presentation that goes live into the corpus to illustrate how it works, please be prepared with a back-up plan for your presentation if the internet is not cooperating!

Please address the following questions:

  1. What is the name and purpose of the corpus?
  2. Could you imagine using this corpus for a course project in this course, another course, your thesis?
  3. How big is the corpus?
  4. What language(s)?
  5. What kind of speakers?
  6. How do you access it? (URL? Download?)
  7. Can you browse text or just search?
  8. Is it annotated? by humans or machines?
  9. What kind of metadata (social info), mark-up, annotation is available?
  10. What tools can/must you use?
  11. What does it have: Concordance info? Frequency info? POS tags?

Aim for a presentation that is 10 minutes. Please let me know by the preceding week if you expect to be much out of that range, so I can adjust other content. If there will be a handout or PPT, please send it to me at least 24 hours before class. I'm happy to discuss your presentation/plans as they develop.
