RESEARCH PROJECT
Biosludge dewatering is critical in the handling process as it significantly affects the costs of wastewater treatment plants. Unfortunately, despite extensive research, the dewaterability of sludge flocs is poorly understood, due to the complicated nature of biosludge. My research project seeks to develop a deeper and more mechanistic understanding of the biosludge dewatering process. I examine individual flocs at the microscale using microfluidic and microscopy techniques to delineate the permeability of the individual floc. At the meso-scale, I use a rheometer to manipulate the actual dewatering process. I anticipate that this approach will eventually help us build a thorough understanding of bulk-scale processes such as sludge dewatering and mass transfer through sludge flocs.
